  • Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: The Rangers have 25 players left at camp and will cut that number to 22 by their season opener next Wednesday. Dylan McIlrath and Raphael Diaz are battling for the seventh defenseman spot. Emerson Etem and Tanner Glass appear to be battling for the 13th forward. Jayson Megna is still on their roster, but didn’t play on Monday and isn’t expected to play tonight. Viktor Stalberg and Oscar Lindberg have unofficially made the team.
  • Tom Gulitti of The Record: Pavel Zacha will only be on the Devils opening night roster if they feel he is NHL ready or “really close.” They won’t keep him around just to gain some experience before returning junior.

“That nine-game window is important,” Hynes said. “It’s really player specific in a sense that if they’re really close to making the team and you have to make a pretty solid decision, then there’s big value there because you get those extra games, regular season games, which is different. So, there is huge value to that.

“If it’s keeping someone just to keep him and give him the experience, that’s a different situation. That’s not developmentally good for the guys.”

  • Chris Hine of the Chicago Tribune: Antti Raanta played 14 games last season for the Blackhawks, he spent a day with the Cup, but the team didn’t put his name on the Cup. A Finnish report said Raanta told them he was rooting against the Blackhawks after he lost his backup job – Raanta denied the report.
  • Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Michael Raffl and Sean Courturier missed practice yesterday with “upper-body injuries.” Michal Neuvirth was given a maintenance day after leaving Monday’s morning skate early, but is expected to be ready for tonight. Matt Read said he’s been dealing with a charley horse.
  • Chuck Gormley of CSN Mid Atlantic: In the next couple of days, Capitals Nicklas Backstrom (hip) and Brooks Orpik (wrist) could be cleared for non-contract practices.

“I don’t have the authority to make that decision, but it looks like it’s getting closer to that,” Trotz said. “Backy has been skating very well in controlled conditions and once you get into practice you’ve got to avoid people a little bit and we have to see how he reacts to that.”

Marcus Johansson (back) and Michael Latta (lower-body) are expected to return tonight. Chris Brown is expected to miss a few weeks with a hand injury.

  • Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: The Oilers will be without right winger Jordan Eberle for four to six weeks with a shoulder injury. Eberle could miss as many as 16 games.

“It wasn’t anything big, just kind of a small hit,” he said. “I was trying to keep the play alive, reaching for the puck and kind of just folded my shoulder over.

“I knew something was wrong and got back to the bench. I was definitely in a lot of discomfort and pain.”

Surgery isn’t required at this time.

  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth had been icing his knee all week, and may have re-aggravated it last night in the second period – he was pulled for precautionary reasons. GM Ron Hextall said they think he’ll be fine for the start of the season next Thursday. The Flyers still have Jason LaBarbera in camp and he doesn’t have to clear waivers to be sent down. The Flyers are at 25 players in camp, so they’ll have to cut at least one more skater.
  • Rich Chere of the NJ.com: Devils Kyle Palmieri suffered an injury in the second period of last night’s game. Head coach John Hynes isn’t worried.

“As of now, no. But we have to figure out more after we talk to the trainers,” Hynes said.

“He’s just got a little minor tweak right now. We didn’t want him to finish the game, just rest up,” Hynes explained.

  • Chuck Gormley: Capitals coach Barry Trotz didn’t rule Brooks Orpik (wrist) out of their last preseason game on Sunday.
  • Chuck Gormley: Trotz said there is no timetable for Nicklas Backstrom’s return and they won’t risk it rushing him back.
  • Dhrien Mahiban: Pavel Datsyuk’s agent said Datsyuk is expected to start skating in two to four weeks and will return to the lineup in five to six weeks.

The Blue Jackets have fired head coach Todd Richards and hired John Tortorella. The Blue Jackets now owe the Canucks a second round pick.

On the Lightning …

  • Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Agent Don Meehan on TSN 1050 on the contract situation between Steven Stamkos and the Lightning.

“Well, I think although it may not be the norm, it’s not unprecedented. We had a client, Corey Perry, who ended up signing in his last year as well and Ryan Getzlaf, one of this teammates, did the same thing. Very, very substantial players. Very important to their team.

“We have a great rapport and an excellent professional relationship with Steve Yzerman and these are some issues that Steven and I dealt with at the end of the year. That we’ve talked about. All that we’re really doing at this point in time is taking a little bit more time.

“But we’re engaged with Steve Yzerman. And as I say, we have a great relationship with him. And when you get to a point in a career where you have professional decisions to make like this – as you know, the Collective Bargaining Agreement doesn’t really afford you this kind of opportunity that often. And the Collective Bargaining Agreement is a give and take process, and it’s something that you – for this kind of a decision and this kind of player, I really think that you have to practice due diligence to the nth degree.”

On the Rangers …

  • Justin Tasch of the NY Daily News: Defenseman Dan Boyle was scratched last week so that Dylan McIlrath could get a chance to prove himself. It might be something Boyle has to get use. It has been difficult for him.

“Of course, yeah,” said Boyle, who will play tonight against Carolina at the Garden.

Coach Alain Vigneault has spoken with Boyle, and GM Jeff Gorton has spoken with Boyle’s agent.

“So he’s aware of it,” said Vigneault, who says he’ll do what’s best for the club. “I didn’t expect him to be happy about it and cheery about it, but human nature is that at 39, he’ll probably need a bit more rest and we need to be smart with him, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Boyle carries a $4.5 million on his 35-and-over deal and is likely untradeable.

“We’re not sure,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We’ll evaluate him and tell you (Wednesday).”

David Backes said the stick was to the throat area.

“It was stick in the throat. Hopefully he’ll be all right and we won’t be missing another high-end forward. Whatever happens, we’ve got to move forward. We’ve got another tough game Thursday.”

Rookie defenseman Colton Parayko missed last night’s game with a lower-body injury.

Goalie market for an expansion draft …

Allan Muir of SI: Muir thinks that if the NHL expands, there could be a bunch of trades as teams put together their protected list for an expansion draft.

With teams potentially only being able to protect one goalie, goalies that could become available could include Frederik Andersen (ANA), Mike Smith (ARI), Malcolm Subban (BOS), Semyon Varlamov (COL), Antti Niemi and Jack Campbell (DAL); Jimmy Howard (DET), Laurent Brossoit (EDM), Darcy Kuemper (MIN), Mike Condon (MON), J-F Berube (NYI), MacKenzie Skapski (NYR), Andrew Hammond (OTT), Marc-André Fleury (PIT), Philipp Grubauer (WSH), Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson (WPG).

That list doesn’t contain goalies who could be UFAs after next season – Scott Darling (CHI), Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth (PHI) and Brian Elliott (STL).

Could also see teams make side deals to not select a player. Example could be the Capitals offering a draft pick and a contract like Brooks Orpik to not select Grubauer.

On the Minnesota Wild …

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: This offseason, the Wild will look again at trading a defenseman for a center. There has already been the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for Jonas Brodin rumor. A shoulder injury to Wild prospect Gustav Olafsson could throw a wrench into a trade. Olafsson is bigger than Brodin, has a harder shot and is NHL ready.

On the Edmonton Oilers …

Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal: Though he hasn’t been great for the Oilers since being acquired from the Canadiens, the Oilers should re-sign Zack Kassian to a one-year contract extension. A qualifying offer would cost the Oilers $2 million.

Jonathan Willis of Oilers Nation: What the Oilers should do with their pending free agents.

Re-sign: Zack Kassian, Iiro Pakarinen, Jordan Oesterle and David Musil.

Don’t re-sign: Nikita Nikitin, Adam Miller, Brad Hunt, Ryan Hamilton, Adam Cracknell, Niklas Lundstrom, Luke Gazdic, Tyler Pitlick, Adam Clendening and Kale Kessy.

Depends on contract terms: Eric Gryba and Adam Pardy

“It’s encouraging to see him out there,” Cooper said. “Baby steps, but we thought it might be weeks away and now maybe it’s not going to be that.”

On the San Jose Sharks …

  • Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Matt Nieto missed yesterday’s game, but neither is expected to be out long-term.

“I would term them day-to-day, but not available today,” DeBoer said on Saturday morning.

    Coach Pete DeBoer yesterday.

“Any time he’s out, you’re concerned. He’s a key guy for us,” DeBoer said. “I guess the silver lining, it’s better now than three or four weeks from now. The good news is it’s not long term. He will be back.”

Nieto will likely be out longer than Vlasic, but he’ll be ready before the end of the regular season.

“[Sunday] was his first day he actually took shots and that went fairly well,” Hynes said. “We’re by no means going to rush him back but he is on a normal track like any other player would be to hopefully progress into a practice situation this week. We’ll see where it goes from there.”

On the Buffalo Sabres …

  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Robin Lehner missed his second straight game on Saturday with an ankle injury. They are hoping to avoid surgery.

“That’s not necessarily the case for Robin at all,” the coach said. “Just rest and rehab right now and strengthening. There will be an evaluation a little bit later in the week next week.”

On the Winnipeg Jets …

  • Sara Orlesky: Mathieu Perreault is out indefinitely with a concussion.

On the Vancouver Canucks …

  • Jeff Paterson: Dan Hamhuis wanted to take his jaw protector off his helmet last week, but doctors said no. He’ll wear the protector for the remainder of the season.
  • Ben Kuzma: Derek Dorsett (upper-body) will go on the Canucks three-game road trip.

On the Philadelphia Flyers …

  • Tim Panaccio: Michal Neuvirth had a MRI yesterday and it was discovered that he has a meniscus tear in his left knee. He could be able to return for the playoffs.

On the Anaheim Ducks …

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: David Perron suffered a shoulder injury and will be out week-to-week. Perron was trying to make a hit, but lost his balance and crashed into the boards. He’ll be traveling back to Southern California to have a MRI.

“I don’t know how bad it is but I assume it’s week-to-week,” Boudreau said after practice at Bell Sports Complex. “We’re on the road for eight more days. I’ve got to believe it’s week-to-week at this point.

“He’s out for the trip. If he’s going to go home, he’s not going to come back. It’d be lovely if he could and meet us in Edmonton or something but I’m not counting on it.”

Jack Eichel will travel with the team on their road trip. He didn’t play on Saturday and missed yesterday’s practice with the flu or food poisoning.

Also missing practice yesterday were Cody Franson (concussion), Robin Lehner (ankle) and Jason Kasdorf (groin). Lehner won’t be going on their road trip.

“Resting, recovering, rehabbing, working out off the ice in his spot right now,” Byslma said. “We just want to take it slow. You’re dealing with the continuing of the ankle sprain. He could tape it up and try to skate today and see how the tweak goes or see where it’s at, but really kind of taking a full rest and recovery for it.”

Top 10 NHL Free Agent Signings Of The 2015 Off-Season

While teams are generally forced to overpay in free agency – significantly in many cases – every year there are a handful of players who sign contracts favorable to their new team.

Whether it being a player taking less money and/or term to sign with a contender, a team buying low on a player or anything in between there were plenty of good contracts signed prior to the 2015-16 season.

Taking into account value of the contract, cap hit and length here are the top-10 NHL free agent signings from the 2015 offseason.

Artemi Panarin would be a top free agent signing from last year, but he signed on April 29th and not in the offseason, so we excluded him from the list.
